5 Divorce Tips For Parents

Put Our Decades of Criminal Defense Experience in Your Corner
|

At Bublitz Law, P.C., our experienced Boise divorce attorneys have handled many cases where children were involved. Divorce is never easy, but it can be a far more stressful and complex process if you have kids. Children are deeply impacted by divorce, so the process can be especially hard on them. To help you handle your divorce in the best way possible, our lawyers have compiled these five tips.

1. Avoid Conflict In Front of Your Kids

One of the worst things you can do during a divorce is fight with your ex in front of your children. No matter how upset, frustrated, or angry you may be, you are doing your child a disservice by exposing them to hostile arguments.

2. Find Ways to Reduce Stress

It’s no secret that divorce is a stressful process, and it’s even more stressful when children are involved. If you’re stressed, you’re far more likely to engage in behavior that is harmful to you or your children. If you find yourself being overwhelmed, consider fitness classes, therapy, or anything else to help you deal with the stress.

3. Help Your Child Understand & Manage Their Emotions

Children can be very emotional by nature, but they may not have a true understanding of what they are feeling and why. Particularly for younger children, it is very helpful to sit down and just listen. When your child is done venting their feelings, you can discuss them and help them manage their emotions.

4. Diffuse the Tension

While we’ve already discussed avoiding outright hostility in front of your kids, it is also important to diffuse tension, even when the other parent is not present. For example, when a child returns to one parent’s care after spending the weekend at the other parent’s house, the first parent may be hesitant to ask if they had a good time, what activities they did, etc. Children pick up on this tension, and it can cause them to become withdrawn or act out.

5. Remember that Divorce is a Process

While all of these tips are extremely important, none of them can be integrated into your life overnight. The reality is, divorce is a process, and you should expect that it can take at least 2 years for you and your child to feel “normal” again. Even if you’ve already engaged in harmful behaviors, you can still work to help your child through this difficult time.
